In the Pliocene Epoch, the Firvulag were naturally operant. The plot sounds interesting and I like the direction things are going with Aiken Drum Since the exotics are otherwise extremely difficult to kill, lowlife humans take advantage of this weakness once it is discovered.

Each latent or operant individual has a different combination of these abilities and, amongst the Tanu, those with similar abilities were organized into guildscalled the Five Guilds Mental, each with a guild leader. When I discovered my library had the next book in the series, I picked it up as quickly as possible.


One of the surprises of this series is that May manages to combine the medieval with the futuristic, the comic with the cruel and tragic, the serious realism of some characters with the caricatured and grotesque, the past and the future, as if many of the themes were aspects of the original duality of the Tanu and Firvulag whose home planet, incidentally, is called Duat It becomes clear to the reader that the Tanu and Firvulag did not escape our Earth of six million years ago, leaving the ramapithecines to evolve into humanity.

And, hey, by the standards of or whenever it was the book is really quite progressive — lots of female characters, lots of female POV characters, several gay characters. She is Brede Shipspouse. Wasn’t drawn into it after 2 chapters.
