I’m glad I picked this book up from the huge pile of procrastinated readings. Apart from that one, the only other story I had read before is the first, “The Pusher”. Blue Champagne collects eight thought-provoking stories from one of the genre’s undisputed masters, including the Hugo Award-winner “The Pusher,” and the Hugo and Nebula award-winner “Press Enter.

This one has some very unpleasant news. The Golden Globe Eight Worlds. The City of Brass. This is a collection of short stories covering the very late 70s and early 80s. One of the main characters is QM. By the way, it’s Megan Gallagher, not Megan Galloway.

The Dream-Quest of Vellitt Boe. Want to Read Currently Reading Read. So far, so good. The title story, in the first category, bpue probably my favorite all told. But it should be read before the next story “Tango Charlie and Foxtrot Romeo” both for some common background elements and a shared character.
The Anna-Louise Bach stories and some of the others are set much earlier than the Eight Worlds novels, although according to Wikipedia these pre-invasion stories are not actually part of the Eight Worlds chronology at all, which I bule realised.
I read A LOT of classic sci fi, hundreds on hundreds of books in the 70s, and these are my favorite, plus some of Heinlein’s. A Taste of Honey. While the read was smooth, the philosophical ideas were not. I’m only awaiting orders, varlfy told herself. Jun 02, Lois Tucker rated it it was amazing.

John Varley is at his best when he’s describing the tiny details about life in the far-flung future, and that’s what ALL of these stories are about.
Mar 08, Lynda rated it it was amazing. I simply get drawn I love this book. It includes my very favorite Varley short story ever. The only truly insignificant story here is “The Manhattan Phone Book Abridged “, which is a compilation of very short vignettes of representative people from that book, who no longer exist. The one with the sidekick is not Anna-Louise is Megan Galloway and the Golgen Gypsy is not electrical it operates through force fields that interact with specific molecules according to a very complex math.

For me Varley’s work captures an blje blend of entertaining story telling wrapped around big ideas. Won the Hugo, Nebula and other awards.
