I’m not a fucking idiot. Everything is suppose to be fine now that Cia is at the university, but Cia still has vague memories about her time in the Testing causing her to question the motives of her friends and the Commonwealth’s leaders. The brightest children from each colony are selected to compete for entrance into the University. I mean I can’t blame them since they live in a pretty messed up world, but as a reader it can become repetitive.
As the story moves on, the characters, especially Cia, really come into their own. Want to Read Currently Reading Read. While there is romance, it doesn’t get in the way of the story. She remembers ancient governing procedures whose incredibly obscure rules allow her to pass a test that nobody else can. Unfortunately, readers probably did not have their memories wiped like the characters did, which means for people like me who re-read The Testing recently in order to refresh my memory, Independent Study seemed pretty much exactly the same.
How can you sit next to someone that ultimately tried to shoot their crossbow at you, shot you in the stomach with a gun you didn’t realize they had, left you behind-no one would ever get past it. Cia decides that she needs to leave Tosu City immediately. I’m giving this three stars because overall, it was a perfectly “fine” second book. She knows that Tomas knows what happened to Zandri and that Will cannot be trusted, but now she must meet a whole new group of students from Tosu City, the capital of the United Commonwealth.
There are now twelve students remaining. They are all supporting characters who help the main character, Cia, on her quest to expose The Testing for what it truly is.
