This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. The very copious notes included in the volume clearly tell the reader where Fitzgerald was intending to take the story, but it is still frustrating to not be able to finish the journey with his winning prose. If he followed-through on his notes and outlines, I think it could have fizzled in unnecessary melodrama. Fitzgerald treats his women better, even his minorities better. Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald was an American writer of novels and short stories, whose works have been seen as evocative of the Jazz Age, a term he himself allegedly coined.
However, in his hubris, Stahr crosses one red line too many when he falls for a young troubled engaged woman called Kathleen Moore and neglects Cecilia Brady, the young daughter of studio executive and Stahr’s boss, Pat Brady. His notes show that he intended to scrap and rewrite one chapter from scratch.

The owner is a big fan of American literature of the mid-twentieth century and of Hemingway and his circle in particular, so something by Fitzgerald was on our radar from the beginning. That is to say by making Cecelia at the moment of her telling the story, an intelligent and observant woman, I shall grant myself the privilege, as Conrad did, of letting her imagine the actions of the characters.

The film substitutes daily rigmarole and movie set interaction for the introduction of Boulting as the dull love interest and shoots her body accordingly. Bill, Martha and their little child Hal are spending a quiet winter Sunday in their cosy house when they get an unexpected visit from Mike Nickerson and Tony Rodriguez.
His main opponent becomes a union organizer, Brimmer, but Stahr finds ways to deal with him as well.
