Ok, I’m seething again. Sabriel is coming to the end of her For instance, the Clayr’s glacier has an air of oppression and deep sadness, while the great library Lirael came to love conveyed a sense of hope. I lirarl the ending; it seemed fitting given the attitudes of the characters it involved throughout the book itself. Finally, when it is confirmed just oh how special the girl is, she is sent out of the glacier to save the world.

While the Abhorsen series continues to thrive on its magic and worldbuilding, the characterisation in Lirael is unfortunately not up to par with its predecessor, Sabriel. As much as I love Tim Curry as a narrator, even he couldn’t save this audiobook.

Most of the book is told from her point of view, though the view point does occasionally switch, another plus of the book, and she is such a relatable character just as Sabriel was in the first book.

Lirael Old Kingdom 2 – Dec 7 3 Jan 16, Erneut konnte mich Garth Nix mit seinem Stil, der weniger an Fantasy als an einen Roman erinnert, fesseln und ich fand die Charaktere, die wir in diesem Band begleiteten, noch besser aufgebaut als im ersten Teil. I didn’t even like Hedge. Everything from the Abhorsen’s house to the river Ratterlin has character and charm. I think it made a fascinating world and sense of magic. She embodies everything I look for in a protagonist. This is also echoed in Sameth’s story, as he struggles to accept or avoid his role as Abhorsen-in-Waiting.

This volume concluded on an unresolved note, with Lirael and Sam both contending with the grim prospect of having to face this new adversary, setting up the stage for the next book, Abhorsen.

It is difficult for me to handle immature behavior. When first reading Lirael Liael was disappointed that there was little mention or appearance of Sabriel and Touchstone as they were my favourite characters from the first book in the series. Hiding out in the library to avoid speaking to anyone, her isolation from the Clayr is palpable and you really feel for her.

I’m not a huge fantasy person, but I’m always up for a kick-ass heroine such as Lirael. Sabriel can pretty much stand alone, but the second two books are basically one long continued story, with Lirael setting things up, and Abhorsen bringing them to a close.

Lirael was as appalling as Sabriel was awesome. I never expected to be let down by Mr Nix – and in such an underhanded manner! Thanks for telling us about the problem. Death portrayed as gadth river with 7 gates?


Lirael and Sameth both felt very realistic, although I was disappointed that the story didn’t pick up where Sabriel had left off — it made the romance between her and Touchstone feel very insta-love, but alas. Similar to what Mogget did in the first book. I mostly liked the pace. It has lain lost and forgotten for fifteen hundred years in the ancient heartland of England — a scrap of glass and metal melded by fierce fire.

I read this book first when I was njx 14 and no matter how many times I came back to it later in life it still had the same qualities to it that made it one of my favourite fantasy books when I was younger.
