Great Series – not for the easily offended. I felt that the author’s apparent desire to show the reader how close his tale is to historical reality damages thf flow of what would otherwise have been a good work of fiction. According to Fraser, no one knows for sure. Their motives are the most twisted of all. Some nice rolls in the hay, but at this point, there isn’t much novelty left. It is so, Joe? Like the other books in the series this one also is well researched and well written. Well, history takes its course and the raid of course does happen, but along the way Flashy manages to bed a thee of women, escape by the skin of his teeth more than once, glashman more than one old enemy, and comes out smelling like a rose, as usual.

I’m currently re-reading it a full 20 years after publication for perhaps the fifth or sixth time and I’m enjoying it far more now than I did then. But not great, for me anyway. Brown, like Crixus, like Atropos too, in a different manner, lives in a world of fantasy. Only the US wants the raid to fail. Flashman roams through history again, this time playing a hand in John Brown’s raid on Harper’s Ferry. Flashman did mention three coincidences, although he fails to call the third for what tye is.

Comber will organise the raid that will topple slavery at a blow: Other books in this series. So far this has been my favorite Flashman story of the series. I’ve studied John Brown and the Harpers Ferry raid pretty extensively for other projects, and as an admirerer of Brown, and Snd was very curious to see how Flashy and Fraser were gonna pull this off.

Sticking like a train to it’s historical tracks there is less “fiction” within the papers than lorx. It shows as Flashman gets into places when it is convenient lotd gets back when it is not. There is also mention of an abdominal wound inflicted by a Turkish knitting needle, which is otherwise referenced, and was probably inflicted by a bedmate rather than in any more formal action.
