The Cat of Bubastes. Frankly I wasn’t sure I would make it through the first 30 minutes, but the story started to rope me in. But it’s not just the historical accuracy, which perhaps is more the fault of Henty’s sources than Henty himself.

I admit that ct first couple of chapters which are mostly battle scenes made me gubastes with despair. We listened to the audiobook version while in the car. Many elements of a best-seller are here, hidden under a nineteenth century style that didn’t age well. It is the story of a young prince who becomes a slave when the Egyptians conquer his people, then is made a fugitive when his master accidentally kills a sacred cat.
But, I loved it anyway. For me, as an older reader used to more sophisticated writing, the lack of character development was a disappointment and the flat dialog was distracting. My biggest complaint is that I find myself pausing every couple of paragraphs to paraphrase for the boys.
