This book is the best beginner’s guide available on what vacuum tubes do and how to use them. There is absolutly no reason why the motivated individual cannot build their own tube amp. The Art of Electronics.

This is a reasonably good but not really comprehensive book, best picked up after you can solder, use test equipment-you cannot build or troubleshoot without a generator and some kind of oscilloscope as well as an AC voltmeter accurate to.

Tube-based audio has always had a do-it-yourself DIY aura about it. Every time I read it I learn something new. Author Rozenblit starts with a simple, clear explanation of what a vacuum tube is, and how bruxe works. Introductory texts on any subject invariable walk the tightrope between overwhelming the reader with technical information or boring the reader with too much explanation and too little useful content.
Next, the author walks the reader through power sources for the amplifier dealing with how power supplies work, how to build regulated supply types, all you’ll need to know about the variety of power designs, and how desiign use each of the components needed in them. It is quite another, however, to understand why the use of certain design topographies and concepts inevitably result in particular sonic flavorings.
