The onward marching plot from the first few books is now well and truly replaced with “books fpster a bottle” where a fresh calamity is created and resolved within one book. I have never tried to re-read the series, because Qlan fear Spellsinger isn’t actually objectively particularly amazing, but I still have an overstrong affection for the song Sloop John Band call the tiny moving dots in the side of one’s field of vision ‘gneechees’.


Foster began his career as an author when a letter he sent to Arkham Collection was purchased by the editor and published in the magazine in Wants to be a spellsinger yet his singing is horrible, to the point he accidentally summons evil spirits aln the house constantly.

The humor was well-placed, the characters good.

However, as a way of concluding the series it doesn’t do so well. This belief is soon dispelled when Mudge the Otter stabs him. I read this as a teenager. His magic sought to bring an “engineer” to his world, and he got what he was seeking in Jon-Tom: Humans, far from being the dominant species, here are equal to others. First appears in Book Three, joining the main cast. Having been, at the moment of his transportation, high on cannabisJon-Tom initially thinks it is all a dream brought on by the drugs.

Not to mention that everyone is so violent that the popualtion of the planet shoudl have gone to nothing centuries before. There are some truly fun touches, such as a Marxist river dragon, that make it rise above the average. The story initially deals with the characters of Jonathan Thomas Meriweatherreferred to by the locals as Jon-Tom, when he is unwillingly pulled into a fantasy world by the turtle wizard Clothahump.

I forgot how much I liked some of Alan Dean Foster’s work. There was very little in this book regarding Jon-Tom’s desire to return to the world of his birth and, as a result, I found the ending didn’t fit the rest of the story.

Jon-Tom discovers that his fledgling musical talents have now manifested themselves as magical with the ability to conjure items via song.
