Afoot and Afield: San Diego County: A Comprehensive Hiking Guide
Fantastic updated version of a classic. It is distinct from other similar guidebooks in that it covers the northern two-thirds of the state, including nearly the entirety of the Sierra Nevadas south to Kings Canyon National Park, and the entire Big Sur region along the coast south to Silver Peak Wilderness.
Schad profiles the hikes according to difficulty, provides maps and directions, and writes a step-by-step illustration of the experience of walking on each afkot. The guide is unique in the amount of natural history information it provides, especially the geologic stories of the featured destinations.
Current coauthor Scott Turner has fully updated the book by re-hiking each of the routes contained within the book and adding up to 30 new routes to ensure that information for each trip is fully current.
